The silkie chicks are growing up, so much so the white Silkie Maeve has decided she doesn’t need to sleep with them anymore and she has moved back to the coop with the other grown-up silkies. Luckily Bobblehead (our oldest silkie) is still sleeping with the little ones. They now spend much of the day wandering around the front garden on their own. Soon they will be independent enough to integrate with the main flock in the Pear garden. Out of the eight chicks, two are black, one is orange, and the rest of multi-coloured. I had expected one or two to be white, but none are. As yet we don’t know how many of them are cockerels.
The turkey chicks are also growing up fast. We have started to put them outside for small periods of time in an old dog grate so they gradually get used to it and have more variety. This weekend we will section off an area of the front garden so they can have even more freedom during the day – at night we will still put them in the brooder with the heat lamp.
