Obviously while we were in Islay we sampled the local whisky – surely it would be rude not to? Our days pretty much consisted of walking on a beach, having lunch, visiting a distillery, and then walking again – not a bad life. We thought about going to all the distilleries, but in the end we didn’t go to Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain. We went to Jura instead that day and on our remaining days we wanted to just walk, and not drive. Most of the distilleries are situated on the coast in stunning locations. We didn’t go on any distillery tours preferring simply to sample the whisky, buy a bottle and then explore the coast.
Ardbeg had a lovely cafe which was a bonus.
We visited Bowmore ….
and Lagavulin ….
We are not whisky experts – I wasn’t even sure I liked Islay whiskies before I visited – but we did find quite a few that we liked and now we have something to remind us of our time on Islay.
Back tomorrow with news of the smallholding. It has been an eventful week of life and death, bees and tomatoes ….
