The turkeys are cute, but naughty and seem to spend most of their time jumping onto the fence and escaping so we decided it was time to move them to the turkey enclosure.
This involved first killing Ataturkeyoglu – their dad. He was a good turkey, nice natured, and he sired 30 (and counting) baby turkeys. But we were never planning to breed from him next year – this is why we bought in three one day-old Norfolk Black poults with the hope that one would be a male and would father the next generation – it’s all about genetic diversity! I was worried that Ataturkeyoglu might see the comic posturing of the turkey poults as a threat and attack or kill them, so we killed him – he will be a tasty dinner for us and some good friends.
The turkey hens were interested in what was happening
N.B. For the record Ataturkeyoglu weighted in at 7kg prepared weight.
N.B. One of the Norfolk Black poults wasn’t looking too well yesterday and then this morning I couldn’t find him/her. Hope they are OK, but more importantly hope it wasn’t the little male turkey.
